Surge arresters, also referred to as surge protectors or SPDs (Surge Protection Devices), are devices used to protect electrical systems and electronic equipment from overvoltages generated by atmospheric discharges (storms) or by switching manoeuvres.

With the growing expansion of photovoltaic systems located in isolated places or placed on building structures with a more or less extensive surface, they are subject to direct and indirect lightning strikes, resulting in a high risk of damage to both property and people.

The consequences of lightning on photovoltaic generators can have repercussions, in addition to the photovoltaic system, also to the electrical system connected to it and to other circuits (data transmission, control, protection, etc.) due to LEMP (impulsive electromagnetic fields). The consequences that occur due to lightning are the complete destruction of sophisticated equipment or malfunctioning of the same, resulting in a high economic loss; for this reason, effective protection against lightning and surges is essential.

They are an excellent product for protecting electrical and electronic equipment from overvoltages and at the same time they represent a good compromise between costs and benefits, especially when the limitation of overvoltage is associated with a high reduction in the risk of fire. In fact, overvoltages can be the cause of fire ignition almost as much as those attributable to short circuits.
